Baseball
|
Baseball at Husson University was first established in 1955 under Head Coach Del Merrill. Del coached the team for their first 19 seasons. Over the years, Husson baseball has helped in the growth and development of many young men. Traditionally, the Eagles (formerly the Braves) compete for the top spots in the conference. Husson baseball is led by legendary coach Dr. John Winkin. Coach Winkin is a member of seven Hall-of-Fames, including: the American Baseball Association, the Maine Baseball, the Maine Sports, Maine High School Coaches, University of Maine Sports, Waterville Boys and Girls Club, Waterville YMCA and the Coaches Clinic, Halls of Fame. Throughout his years, Coach Winkin has led six University of Maine squads to the College World Series. In 2003, the Husson Eagles compiled a record of 20-15. The baseball team also looks forward to their annual trip to Florida to compete against some of the nation's top NCAA Division III teams. The Eagles call the Harold Alfond Diamond at the Winkin Complex its home. The Alfond Diamond is one of the finest baseball facilities in the North East. The playing surface is composed of FieldTurf, which allows the team to begin the season earlier in the spring and allows them to play deeper into the fall. Renovations have also brought to the Winkin Complex bleacher seating for 3,000 fans. The future of Husson Eagles baseball looks promising to say the least. |
