Start your journey toward earning a Doctor in Occupational Therapy from Husson University today. Our 3+3 OTD program format (3 years of undergrad classes + 3 years of OTD coursework) allows you enter right out of high school on an accelerated path toward earning both a bachelor's degree and an OTD degree in 6 years instead of 7, saving you both time and money on your education. You'll also have the option of choosing whether to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology or Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences during your first three years in the program, ensuring your education fits your interests and career goals.

You’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the dedicated Occupational Therapy Lab that reflects a modern OT workplace and allows for hands-on learning on campus; and Dahl Anatomy Lab, a cadaver lab where you’ll study functional anatomy and dissection.

This is a new and developing program. Applications for the 3+3 tract are being accepted in fall of 2024 for a fall 2025 start. Applications for students who already hold a bachelor's degree and will only be enrolling in the OTD phase will start being accepted in the summer of 2027 for a fall 2028 start.

OTD Program Pathways

Husson's Doctor of Occupational Therapy program is open to both students entering directly from high school and students who have earned a bachelor's degree and met certain prerequisites. For students entering the OTD program right out of high school, Husson offers two pathways using our 3+3 format: the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences pathway and Bachelor of Science in Psychology pathway.

OTD Program Outcomes

Husson University has submitted an application to the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy (ACOTE) for the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program.

The OTD is an applicant program. Once it receives accreditation status, students who complete the program will be eligible to take the National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. NBCOT’s address is One Bank Street, Suite 300, Gaithersburg, MD 20877-4150 and can be contacted at 301.990.7979. After successful completion of this exam, you will be an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR). Husson's NBCOT exam pass rate can be found on the NBCOT webpage. All states require licensure to practice, however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT examination. Please be aware that a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT examination or attain state licensure.

Graduation Requirements 

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Completed a minimum of 194/195 credits BS/OTD or 100 OTD
  • Completed all professional level coursework with a C+ or better
  • Successful completion of 24 weeks of full time (32 hours) Level II fieldwork
  • Successful completion of 14 weeks of full time (32 hours) doctoral capstone experience
  • Dissemination of an individual capstone project

Career Outlook for Doctor of Occupational Therapy Students

The career outlook for occupational therapists and students earning an OTD degree is excellent.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment for occupational therapists will increase by 14 percent from 2021 to 2031. This is considered to be much faster than the average growth rate of all occupations.
