Science & Humanities Minors

The School of Science and Humanities provides a home for a core of science and humanities courses that broaden students' exposure to knowledge, values, learning, and the art of communication. Our faculty include psychologists, poets, historians, and an extraordinary team of writers and scientists who love their subjects and its teaching.

Classes are small and instruction is student-centered. In an age of global village awareness and multi-cultural interaction, the faculty in the once-traditional areas of Arts and Sciences have created innovative new courses and redesigned some existing courses to enable students to prepare for international commerce, health, and other professions in the 21st century.

Academic disciplines come alive at Husson with faculty dedicated to interdisciplinary teaching and relevant clinical experiences. Students learn self-discipline, professionalism, academic integrity, and improve their self-image while meeting these challenges.

Biology
The Bachelor of Science Biology is designed to provide an appreciation of the diversity and unity which characterize living beings, and the opportunity for in-depth study of one or more areas of biology. This degree is appropriate for students with career interests in biological research, health careers, science education and science writing, as well as law and business. This degree is also designed to meet the needs of students who intend to proceed to graduate study in a biological or medical science.

Chemistry
The Chemistry Program provides a rigorous pre-professional undergraduate education for students who intend to pursue a career in science. the pre-pharmacy track emphasizes preparation of motivated students for successful admission into the Husson School of Pharmacy. Additionally, students on the pre-pharmacy track will meet the application requirements for admission into a school of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, or podiatry. The regular track of the Chemistry Program will prepare students to pursue graduate studies in such areas as biochemistry, environmental chemistry, pharmacology, and science education.

English
English at Husson University is writing and communication-focused. Drawing upon the strengths of a strong and well-credentialed faculty, the major emphasis of instruction is your development of verbal and transactional skills that will help prepare you for the challenges of the information economy. As an academic concentration, English can prepare you for business, the professions, or for graduate study. English majors go on to pursue careers in mass media, marketing, law, teaching, technical writing, reporting, editing and other communications-based professions.

Health Care Studies
The Bachelor's degree in Health Care Studies is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of different careers with ties to the health care industry. The program deals with the business, psychological, and medical and scientific side of health care. Students select two tracks among business, psychology and science to prepare them for work in research at academic institutions and medical centers, pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations, and in hospitals dealing with coding, reimbursement and other insurance issues. This degree would also qualify the students to pursue advanced academic studies in graduate and professional schools.

Psychology
The Psychology majors leading to a B.S. in Psychology, the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and M.S. in Human Relations prepare learners for exciting and challenging careers in the mental health and human relations fields. The undergraduate major also prepares them for advanced work leading to careers in psychology. The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program prepares students for careers as Mental Health Counselors (Maine LCPC). The Human Relations graduate program is designed to provide a wide variety of professionals with human relations skills.

Science and Humanities (Individualized Program)
The Bachelor of Science in Science and Humanities degree option allows students to individualize their program of study and to broaden their educational experiences beyond the limits normally permitted in major-focused degrees. Offered as a four-year course of study, the student is expected to select two areas of academic concentration. For each area, there will be a logical and coherent sequence of six or more courses above the introductory level.

The Undeclared Major
Many high school seniors know they want to pursue a specific career in business, health, education, or a profession. Others, however, would like to take a little time before they lock themselves into a major. To accommodate these undecided students, Husson has an undeclared major which is individualized through careful advising by a professor. A first-year student can take basic science and humanity courses and test the waters with introductory courses in other major fields. Usually, by the second semester, the student has settled in and has decided on a direction for future study. With a properly designed first-year curriculum, students can receive full credit for these courses when they determine their major.

Science and Humanities Minors
The School of Science and Humanities offers Behavioral Science, Biology, English, History, Mathematics, Natural Science and Psychology minors. These areas are excellent academic complements to majors in business and health. The ability to communicate is essential to the professional, while understanding human nature and oneself is at the heart of interpersonal relationships at home or at work.
