The Sport Management program effectively blends these two distinct fields of study – sport and business administration – in an effort to prepare students for careers in this field.
The sport management degree emphasizes experiential learning through practical assignments and students are required to complete at least six credit hours of internship experience with a sport organization. Additionally, through collaboration with the American Council of Exercise, students are able to complete the certified personal trainer exam preparatory class based on the American Council of Exercise’s certified personal trainer exam certification.
Students seeking to earn their Master in Business Administration can do so in conjunction with their Bachelor in Science in sport management degree in 5 years.
Minor in Coaching – prepares students interested in helping individuals and teams achieve athletic success. The minor includes the study of the physical, social, medical and strategic aspects of coaching individual and team sports. In addition, this program provides individuals with the opportunity to apply classroom principles in an actual coaching setting through a practicum experience. The minor fulfills the State of Maine coaching endorsement requirements.
Minor in Tourism and Recreation – prepares students to pursue career options in the tourism and outdoor recreation field. The minor provides basic knowledge of recreation, tourism and park services, and an understanding of the benefits of leisure and recreation in our society. To complete the minor, students must take the following 18 hours of required courses which will provide undergraduates with the opportunity to explore recreation, parks and leisure services:
In our Sports Journalism program, you’ll learn how to work as a journalist with a special interest, knowledge and skills in sports. Our students learn how to find and work with sports information. They also learn how to report, write, shoot and edit sports news for print, audio, video and on-air broadcasts. The Web, newspapers, magazines, radio and television all play a role in a graduate’s education. You’ll gain hands-on experience reporting sports news and doing play-by-play, interviews and color commentary for our radio station, WHSN 89.3 FM, for our television mobile-production unit and for our TV news and sports programming. And you can be a sports writer for our student-run, online newspaper The Spectator.
Our focus is to prepare our Sports Journalism students to become “backpack” journalists. They learn not only the writing part of the job but also the photography and video skills needed to be successful in this evolving field.
In the user experience (UX) design undergraduate certificate program, students will learn how to create products that provide a meaningful experience to end users through the application of user experience (UX) principles.
If your dream is to make films, shoot commercials, plan a documentary or direct a live television show, this program is for you. With courses in lighting, editing, directing, audio and videography, the New England School of Communications (NESCom) video/film production program prepares students to step into the workforce with hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment. With hundreds of years of collective industry experience, our faculty work to help you develop expertise and creativity as you master the professional production, knowledge and skills employers demand. As part of their studies, students participate in live news and sports television broadcasts, film productions and group projects. Unlike other programs, NESCom video/film production students begin working with equipment in their first year.
The Certificate in Web Design is suited for any professional or aspiring entrepreneur wanting to have a solid foundation in core web concepts and technologies including HTML, CSS and Javascript. The Certificate in Web Design prepares students to be able to work with internal or external web or marketing teams in support of web and web marketing initiatives. Students will learn to maintain and manage an existing web presence, and also to be able to define, design, develop and deploy a basic web presence.
The Certificate in Web Media provides a basic knowledge in the use of media-related software tools, general web concepts, search marketing and user-experience and interaction design as well as the ability to communicate a market driven perspective with regard to all media.
