Husson University’s Ninth Hart Open Studio Event to Showcase Student Art, Photography and Graphic Design

WHAT: An exhibition on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 will highlight fine art, photography, and graphic designs created by Husson University students. The creative expressions in this show were composed in a variety of different mediums. Student drawings, paintings, pastels, photography, graphic design, set design, digital illustration, collages, assemblages, and batik prints will all be on display. WHEN: Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. WHERE: Husson University Hart Hall - Basement Hart Art Studio 1 College Circle Bangor, ME 04401 WHY: This showcase is designed to give students an opportunity to share their work with the public. Second Annual Walk for Warmth 5K to Help Purchase Home Heating Oil for Needy Families this Winter

Husson University Student Government, in partnership with the United Way of Eastern Maine, will be sponsoring their second annual Walk for Warmth on Sunday, November 18, 2018. Registration for this five kilometer (5K) fun run and walk opens at 9 a.m. on the university’s Bangor campus at the Newman Gymnasium. The walk begins at 10 a.m. Last year the “Walk for Warmth” raised $1,500 to help local Bangor families pay for heating oil during the winter.

The Gracie Theatre at Husson University kicks off its seventh season of shows on October 4 with Ed Asner starring in his one-man show A Man and His Prostate. Asner is best known for his work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, its spin-off series Lou Grant, his role as Santa Claus in the comedy film Elf, and as the voice of elderly widower Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar Animation Studios’ film UP. There is a 1 p.m. matinee performance and a 7 p.m. evening performance.

Fresh Check Day at Husson University

Husson will be holding its first annual Fresh Check Day at the G. Peirce Webber Campus Center in Peabody Hall on the University’s Bangor campus on March 21, 2018 from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Initially created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, Fresh Check Day is an event designed to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention. The event will feature interactive booths, peer-to-peer messaging, support from multiple campus departments and groups, free food, entertainment, and exciting prizes and giveaways. Fresh Check Day aims to create a bridge between students and the mental health resources available on campus and in the Greater Bangor area.

Husson’s Fighting Eagles Boxing Club’s Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser to Punch Out Parkinson’s Disease

Local area residents diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease have few wellness or exercise groups devoted exclusively to their needs. To address this situation, physical therapy and occupational therapy students at Husson University are working to launch the Fighting Eagles Boxing Club. The club would provide Parkinson’s patients with the opportunity to engage in non-contact boxing. In non-contact boxing, participants punch free-standing heavy bags and punch mitts held by coaches and student volunteers, without punching each other.

The sweet honey of victory and the sting of defeat are all a part of the annual Penobscot County Spelling Bee finals. As in years past, the Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Husson University’s Gracie Theatre in Bangor. The winner of this competition will qualify to compete in the 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition in the Washington, D.C. area this May. The event at Husson is free and open to the public.

Husson University Researchers Share in $500,000 Research Award from NIFA-USDA

Husson University announced today that two of their faculty members and a University of Michigan faculty member have received a $500,000 research award from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the United States Department of Agriculture (NIFA-USDA). The research funded by this award will be looking at the interactions between the natural chemical compounds found in broccoli sprouts and gut bacteria to determine if broccoli sprout consumption could help reduce the development of cancerous colon tumors.
