Faculty and Staff participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony

Husson University celebrated the official opening of their new research and education facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. Members of the public joined university trustees, students, faculty, and staff at the entrance of the building at 79 Marshall Road in Bangor for this celebration. Tours of the new facility were provided at the conclusion of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Much of this modern, state-of-the-art facility will be used by SOARing Eagles Healthcare, a pro-bono clinic. Graduate students run the program with the supervision of licensed faculty, providing services free of charge to members of the public who could not otherwise afford it.

“Placing the pro-bono clinic in the Marshall Road building gives us more opportunities to help the community,” said Director of Clinical Education Kim Steinbarger from Husson University’s College of Health and Education. “We hope to extend our services into the evening. This gives our students the opportunity to get hands-on, practical experience as part of their class work.”

While SOARing Eagles Healthcare started as a physical therapy clinic, the long-term vision for this facility calls for additional supervised health services provided by occupational therapy, pharmacy, nursing and counseling students. Nursing students and graduate counseling students are already utilizing new experiential learning-based training rooms and equipment as part of their studies. The upgraded nursing training area includes six hospital beds where nursing students can practice their skills.

In addition, the new building features a health assessment lab and a forensic science lab. State-of-the-art research laboratories for advanced biological and biomedical studies are complemented by specialized facilities for zebrafish and a darkroom. Building features include state-of-the-art ventilation and special flooring that helps prevent the transmission of blood-borne pathogens.

The forensics laboratory provides students pursuing a degree in forensic science in Husson University’s School of Legal Studies with the ability to analyze mock evidence items including blood splatters, hairs, fibers, and arson samples.

“Husson University has made an important investment in educational excellence by purchasing this research and education building,” said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Lynne Coy-Ogan, EdD. “Our need to create new facilities is being driven by student demand. This facility is an important part of the Husson learning experience. It’s a place that connects the theoretical learning to the real-world practical experiences that take place in a professional setting.”

“It’s all part of a much bigger tableau,” continued Coy-Ogan. “This facility, combined with the future construction of a new Wellness Learning Center and a new College of Business building, is providing the physical infrastructure Husson University needs to develop the knowledgeable and educated workforce Maine and the rest of New England will need in the coming decade.”
