Sustainability

What is sustainability?  This simple question leads to a very rich discussion that is being had all over the world, but admits no easy answer.  A great place to start understanding the environmental, social, and economic complexity of this seemingly easy question is with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sustainability-Logo.jpgAt Husson, we support these SDGs at a local, university level, and have adopted a working definition of what sustainability looks like on our campus:  the thoughtful consideration of our resource use to minimize our carbon footprint, maximize our environmental stewardship, and better understand our ecological impacts.   This definition directly confronts the existential climate emergency happening because of greenhouse gas emissions, acknowledges that environmental stewardship is a much larger worldview than one issue or parameter, and admits that we do not fully understand the depth and breadth of our impacts.  It will always be a working definition so that it can evolve as our understanding evolves.

You can listen to Sustainability Director Tom Stone talk about campus sustainability here.
