Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Student

Multi-Factor Authentication for all students in 2023

Husson University (HU) is partnering with Duo Security to implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to further strengthen HU’s software and hardware systems. MFA is an additional layer of security on top of user IDs and passwords.

Duo has already been rolled out successfully to staff and faculty in 2021, and next up is the student rollout. As part of this process, students will need to download the Duo Security app. When you enter your username and password into any of the University systems, Duo will send a message to your smart device prompting a response to gain access.

This video will help to explain how this works:

When logging into systems used by HU such as Canvas, Google Chrome, and Husson email, Duo will provide an additional layer of security.

As part of the "Early Eagle" MFA Enrollment students began utilizing DUO during Fall/ Winter 2022.  In early 2023, the remaining existing students will be added to DUO MFA and in addition, all newly enrolled students are automatically enrolled in the program. Husson University’s IT Department will be available to help during enrollment.

There are two steps each and every person utilizing the University’s network will need to complete:

  1. Download the Duo Mobile Security App to your smart devices such as iPhone, Android, or tablet.
  2. When you log in to a HU system, respond to the Duo pop-up and follow step-by-step instructions on the login page.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I don't have a smart-phone, only a "Flip-Phone" - What should I do?
Contact the Help Desk at 207.973.1000 - We can manually configure your account to allow SMS/Text Message to be used. There is an additional cost to this option, and so we are limiting its use to those that cannot use the mobile app.
  2. I don't have a cell-phone at all - What should I do?
Contact the Help Desk at 207.973.1000 - We have a limited number of 'key-fob' tokens on order, and we will work with you to ensure that you can continue to access your accounts
  3. Does this mean that Husson has control over my phone/tablet?
No - the DUO mobile app has very little access to your phone, and CANNOT make changes to your phone. DUO provides a full detail of what the mobile app can and cannot do, and what little data is collected at https://help.duo.com/s/article/4683?language=en_US
  4. Do I need to allow DUO Mobile to send notifications?
While not strictly required, it is very strongly recommended. If you do not allow notifications, you will have to manually open the app every time you need to use it to authenticate, as it will not prompt you to do so.
Not enabling notifications also means that you will not be alerted if someone has your password, and is trying to use it to authenticate
  5. Can I use different types of devices (Apple Phone, and Android Tablet for example)?
Yes, you are not limited to a single type of device, and can mix-and-match different device types when having multiple devices registered
  6. Do I have to use a Husson Device for DUO Mobile?
No. The app does NOT need to run on a Husson University managed device. Running the mobile app on a personal device does NOT give Husson University any control over your device.
  7. I lost my phone - what should I do?
Contact the Help Desk at 207.973.1000 - We can assist you in signing in, and in getting your new device connected to your account.
  8. I am going to be getting a new phone - what should I do?
Contact the Help Desk at 207.973.1000 - There are a few things that you can do ahead of time to make connecting your new phone to your account easier.
  9. DUO Mobile is asking me to update my phone - What should I do?
We recommend that you follow the suggestion, and go through the process to update your phone through the normal process. Many times you will get this because DUO is aware that an update has been made available before your phone checks and sees that the update is available.
