Computer Recommendations

Thank you for contacting the Husson Information Technology Service Desk regarding your questions on the university computer recommendations.

  • IT recommends a computer that is in your budget and something that you are familiar with and comfortable working with.
  • If you are using or purchasing a laptop machine, we do recommend a traditional Laptop.
  • Tablets, Chromebooks, Android, and other mobile type devices may not be able to run software that may be required in certain courses.
  • We do recommend you check with your degree program administrator or adviser to confirm if there are any software requirements for your major to ensure that it will run on the machine you are looking into.

Here are some general hardware & software specifications that can help you determine the minimum recommended equipment:

Processor Options:

  • Intel or AMD processors: 2 GHz or faster
  • Hard drive capacity: 120GB Min/ 250 Rec
  • At least 8GB of RAM
  • WiFi card: 802.11g Min/ 802.11n Rec
  • Microsoft Office (strongly recommended)
  • Adobe Reader (or similar PDF reader)
  • Google Chrome and/ or Safari

Your Husson University Network account provides your email account which runs on the Google platform, so we recommend students use Google Drive to store their documents, homework and projects in the Drive. This storage location is in the cloud, which allows for consistent backup of files, a large storage capacity and ease of access from anywhere at any time just like email!

We realize this is pretty general information. Our office can help students with basic issues (virus scans, antivirus, troubleshooting) on all computer makes & models, so it is truly a matter of personal preference and budget when it comes to your personal machine.

To protect your equipment, it is recommended that you keep an up to date Anti-Virus program and an Anti-Malware program installed on your machine and run them weekly (or more if you are a heavy internet user). 

Sophos is the preferred Antivirus program that Husson provides to all staff, student, and faculty.

Sophos runs by itself in the background of all Husson machines that run on the University Network. This application does not need to be started or activated as it scans the machine automatically when the computer is on.  In most cases, the only time you will interact with the application is if a virus warning comes up in the task bar. 

If you would like assistance with installing and managing the Sophos application please call or visit the I.T. Help Desk at your convenience. The IT Call Center that can be reached at X1000 or External 207.973.1000 and is available Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 9:00pm and Friday 7:30am to 5:00pm. Winter and summer hours vary.
