BANGOR, MAINE – As law enforcement agencies continue to grapple with unprecedented staffing shortages across all roles, an event planned at Husson University will bring together more than 250 eager students with an interest in law- and legal-related careers with representatives from more than 60 law enforcement agencies, law offices and other organizations who are looking to hire now or in the future.

The 14th Annual Legal Studies Career Day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Newman Gymnasium on the Husson University campus in Bangor, Maine. The event is organized by the School of Legal Studies in Husson University’s College of Business.

With law enforcement and related agencies looking to fill more roles than ever — and anticipating additional openings as retirements hit over the next few years — the career day is an opportunity for students to explore many options for future employment, narrowing down their interests from their first year to their final year.

“Our students have many more choices for criminal justice related careers today with so many opportunities available at legal and law enforcement organizations in Maine and beyond,” said John Michaud, director of the School of Legal Studies. “Moreover, organizations that might not have come to our career day five years ago are now reaching out with interest after hearing about our excellent students who are ready to hit the ground running in their future careers.”

Michaud said that for students, opportunity is coming with more perks as well as an increasing number of agencies are offering signing bonuses to students, which can help tremendously as students transition from the classroom to their careers.

“Organizations are coming to hire our students specifically. For so many criminal justice agencies and law organizations, our students are sought-after because other Husson graduates have done so well in positions for them,” Michaud said.

Husson University’s Legal Studies Career Day attracts local, state and federal law enforcement agencies as well as law firms, law schools and other organizations looking for applicants. Students from Husson’s criminal justice, conservation law, forensic science, and pre-law programs don’t merely learn about career opportunities, but gain valuable experience in presenting themselves in a professional manner and speaking with a variety of people they may not have otherwise encountered.

This year’s event will include representatives from police departments around Maine and New Hampshire as well as the United States Border Patrol, the United States Department of Homeland Security, the United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the United States Secret Service, the Maine Department of Corrections, the Maine Forest Service and many others. The Maine School of Law, the Penobscot County District Attorney, Eaton Peabody, and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be represented.

“Our legal studies programs and our career day have become a sought-after source for new criminal justice and legal professionals in Maine and beyond. We can’t wait to introduce our newest students to recruiters and watch our graduating students complete their journey through education to employment into their dream profession,” said Marie Hansen, JD, PhD, SHRM-SCP, dean of the College of Business.

The event is open to all Husson University students and alumni as well as members of the public. Local technical centers for high school students are also invited. Professional attire is recommended.

“Our strong programs within the School of Legal Studies at Husson University’s College of Business are preparing students for a variety of careers in law enforcement, conservation law, forensic science and legal studies fields, and professionals are noticing,” said Lynne Coy-Ogan, EdD, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “It’s a testament to our faculty’s commitment to preparing students for careers as well as our student’s dedication to their studies to see the demand from law enforcement and legal organizations to be part of this event grow.”
