Husson University Announces Active Shooter Scenario with Orono High School

The Husson University School of Legal Studies, in cooperation with the Orono
Police Department and Orono High School, announces an Active Shooter simulation on April 20, 2013. The event will be held from 9:00-3:00 at the high school under the supervision of Sgt. Scott Wilcox and other members of the Orono Police Department. It functions as a day-long training exercise for students currently enrolled in the Student Police Academy, an upper-level Criminal Justice course offering.

Student cadets will work through varied scenarios that simulate the realities of an active shooter in a school setting. Additionally, students in the Schools of Education and Nursing, the graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, and NESCom will participate in roles relevant to their respective professional responsibilities as future educators, nurses, clinicians/counselors, and journalists. These scenarios are enacted in a controlled environment that promotes applied
learning under the supervision of professionals in those disciplines that students aspire to upon graduation.

According to Assistant Professor Cornel Plebani, “This exercise exemplifies the type of practical and experiential learning that is at the core of student education at Husson. It bridges the classroom and the broader world beyond through emphasizing the necessity of real-world application of knowledge. More so, it encourages and fosters skills related to critical thinking, decision-making, collaboration, and leadership.”
