Professional Development Opportunities

Whether you are seeking to earn a graduate degree, earn hours towards re-licensure, or add a specialty treatment tool to your practice, Husson offers many opportunities for professional development in summer and fall 2023.

To enroll in courses, please fill out a non-degree application. If you are taking courses at Husson for the first time, follow directions for first-time users. If you have taken courses at Husson before, log in as a returning user.

Adventure Therapy - CO 716

Instructor: Dr. Rebecca Edelman An introductory course in Adventure Therapy primarily for graduate students in Counseling programs. 3 credits.

Topics in Using Board Games as Therapeutic Tools - CO 799 G1
June 26 – 30 | 8 am – 4:30 pm

Instructor: Courtney Eastman, MEd
An introductory course in Board Game Play Therapy (BGPT) primarily for counseling students in graduate programs, school counselors and clinicians who would like to add this modality to their practice. 3 credits.

Marriage and Family Counseling - CO 801

The dynamics of marriage and family relationships are examined, with an emphasis on understanding the structure and function of marriage, and ways the counselor may approach marriage and family counseling. 3 credits.

Counseling Techniques - CO 710

This course is designed to help students acquire and develop skills essential to the helping process. Core elements include: the nature of the helping relationship, introduction to basic counseling skills, and an exploration of the attitudes and beliefs involved in developing and maintaining helping relationships. Prerequisite(s): CO 700. 3 credits.

This course enables students to understand the types of groups, their purpose, development and dynamics, counseling theories, and group counseling methods and skills. 3 credits.

 

Addictions Counseling: Treatment and Contemporary Issues - CO 805

Provides an introduction to the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide addictions counseling services in both school and mental health settings.

In this course, students review the historical and philosophical bases for school counseling programs, explore traditional roles for the school counselor, and examine the ethical and legal responsibilities of school guidance counselors. 3 credits.

 

Counseling Techniques - CO 710

Instructor: Dr. Rebecca Edelman This course is designed to provide an orientation to, and overview of, the counseling and human relations professions including a history of the counseling profession, standards, credentialing, professional role and identity development. 3 credits.

Clinical Counseling Internship - CO 891-900

This course allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge and practical counseling skills in an actual practice setting under clinical supervision. Clinical mental health counseling students will complete required hours in a clinical setting. Prerequisite(s): CO 890. 1 credit for each 100 hours

 

School Counseling Internship - CO 881-886

This course allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge and practical counseling skills in an actual practice setting under professional supervision. School counseling students will complete required hours in a school setting. 1 credit for each 100 hours

 

Practicum - CO 890
4 – 7 pm and 7 – 10 pm
Instructor: Dr. Rebecca Edelman This course provides practical clinical instruction and experience in counseling for the purpose of developing individual and group counseling skills. These experiences are similar to what a professional counselor would be expected to perform and enhance the internship experience. 6 credits.

 

Theories of Counseling - CO 705
4 – 7 pm
Instructor: Dr. Sarah Fucillo
This course provides an intensive look at selected theories of counseling and psychotherapy. The major concepts of each theory are reviewed and critiqued in light of current research and theory. Students are encouraged to begin to define their own theoretical approach. 3 credits.

Legal, Ethical, and Professional Issues in Counseling                    CO 711

This course provides a legal and ethical framework for the counseling profession as well as a focus on standards and credentialing and current professional issues relevant to the work of counselors.
Prerequisite(s): CO 700 and CO 702 and CO 703 and CO 704 and CO 705. 3 credits.

This course enables students to understand the types of groups, their purpose, development and dynamics, counseling theories, and group counseling methods and skills. 3 credits.

 

Human Growth and Development - CO 702
4 – 7 pm
Instructor: Nichole Proulx/King, LMFT
This course includes a survey of the physiological, social and psychological factors that influence the development of personality. Students will learn about what makes people distinctively different as they critically evaluate the various theories of personality development. 3 credits.

 

Topics in Trauma Recovery and Building Resilient Therapists - CO 799
4 – 7 pm
Instructor: James LaPierre, LCSW, CCS
Selected topics are offered centering on the needs and interests of the students and the availability of expert faculty. 3 credits.

 

Note: Final assignments/projects for one week courses are expected to be completed within a reasonable time (assigned by the instructor/s) after the final class meeting times.
