Safety Tips

Some ideas to think about when you are...

On Foot:

  • Walk-in pairs, or even better, groups
  • Walk-in well-lighted, open areas
  • Walk confidently at all times
  • Pay attention to your surroundings at all times
  • Avoid bushes, trees, doorways, and parked vehicles, or any obstacles
  • Be prepared to be rude if necessary
  • Check the area that you walk during the day
  • Have the key that you will be using ready
  • Let someone know where you will be walking and when you will be arriving
  • Trust your instincts, if you think you're in a bad situation, go with your instincts

In Your Vehicle:

  • Park vehicle in well-lighted areas
  • Keep your windows up, and your doors locked, no matter how long you will be gone
  • Check the backseat and floor for unwanted passengers before entering
  • Never pick up hitchhikers
  • Let someone know what your destination is and your arrival time at that destination
  • Trust your instincts, if you think you're in a bad situation, go with your instincts

Dating:

  • Think twice before giving out your name and phone number to someone you just met or don't know
  • Think before you drink; alcohol can blur your judgment
  • Many sexual assaults are a result of alcohol and drugs. Carry some "Mad Money" so you can call a taxicab if your date gets out of hand.

In Your Apartment or Home:

  • Have good lighting around entrances
  • Use the locks on doors and windows, even if you're gone for a short time
  • Use extreme caution admitting strangers
  • Think twice about giving out your address to mere acquaintances
  • Report any out of the ordinary things such as strangers or noises
  • Do not place your whole name on your mailbox or in the phone book, use initials and last name.

In Your Residence Hall:

  • Do not prop open locked doors
  • Do not admit strangers in your hall
  • Keep your door locked at all times, even if you're just down the hall in another room
  • Be conscious of strangers. Open the door yourself, and don't invite people in without asking who it is at the door.
  • Trust your instincts

Husson University Security also provides Security escorts on campus. An officer can walk with you or give you a ride to your destination whenever you feel uneasy or something just doesn't seem right. Security Escorts are available 24 hours a day.
