Through our online bachelor's degree in psychology, you'll take courses that give you a deep understanding of how the human mind works and what can be done to maintain its well-being. You'll also be able to focus your coursework on the sub-fields of psychology that interest you, such as clinical or counseling psychology, forensic psychology, psychology of learning, trauma and resiliency, mind-body connection and others.

MH 202 Mind-Body Connection

This course emphasizes the assisting of consumers of mental health services in accessing whole health, integrated care. You'll learn how developing an understanding of the mind-body connection can help those with chronic health conditions, mental health and substance use disorders, medication needs, stress, and other factors affecting wellness. This course is one of eight courses required for eligibility for MHRT/C certification.

PY 231 Social Psychology

Through this course, you'll explore how the behavior, beliefs and perceptions of individuals are impacted by social interactions with other individuals and groups of people. and classic research in the field of social influence and perception. For example, you may look at what causes bullying in schools, why certain stereotypes exist or why certain types of people like or dislike each other. Throughout this course, you'll be introduced to several concepts that provide understanding of the world in new ways. 

PY 447 Trauma and Resiliency

You'll examine the theory and methodology of sexual abuse, non-sexual trauma and the effects of trauma. You'll also learn about awareness of abuse, recognizing the sources of trauma and developing a recovery plan through the use of available resources for prevention and treatment in the State of Maine.

Shelby Helwig, Ph.D

Shelby Helwig, Ph.D, is an assistant professor of psychology at Husson University. She received her master's and and doctorate degrees in psychology from the University of Maine, Orono, and bachelor's degree in psychology from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Helwig has taught a variety of courses including General Psychology, Research Methods, Social Psychology and Applied Psychological Statistics. In her research, she takes a multi-method approach to investigate how individuals stand up to and cope with prejudice and discrimination. In particular, her dissertation investigated how women confront sexism and the benefits of confronting sexism for women’s psychological well-being and health. Helwig is passionate about assisting students in discovering the value that psychology has to their academic, professional and personal development.
