Husson University Holds “Ceremony of the Keys” Event to Open Two New Buildings

Husson University held the “Ceremony of the Keys” event today to celebrate the opening of the University’s new Living and Learning Center and renovations to the Dickerman Dining Center. The event was held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in a tent adjacent to the Living and Learning Center and Dickerman Dining Center.

The Living and Learning Center is an $11 million five-story multi-use building that incorporates experiential learning spaces, classrooms, faculty offices and suite-style living space for 244 students. The building will be eligible for gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Winton Scott Architects of Portland, Maine and Allied Cook of Scarborough, Maine served as the architectural firm and contractor, respectively.

The Dickerman Dining Center received $7 million worth of renovations with many new amenities including a brick oven pizza station, a grab and go section, seating to accommodate 500 students, a breakfast nook, and more. Livermore Edwards & Associates of Waltham, MA and Nickerson & O’Day, Inc. of Brewer, Maine served as the architectural firm and contractor, respectively.

At the ceremony, Husson University administration received the “keys” to both facilities. Bangor Mayor Cary Weston and Husson University Student Government President George Pusey addressed the crowd along with Husson President Robert Clark, Chair of the Board Richard Trott, and representatives from the construction firms. The ceremony was followed by tours of both facilities for guests and the media, as well as an opportunity to sample some of the food in the Dickerman Dining Center.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate the completion of these two important projects for our University’s students,” states Husson President Robert Clark. “The Living and Learning Center and the renovations to the Dickerman Dining Commons will enhance our ability to provide hands-on learning opportunities, offer outstanding student services, and deliver a quality living and learning experience – all of which are core to our mission to transform student lives.”

The Living and Learning Center features classrooms that use storage props, flexible furniture, communications technology, and other resources to increase opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. The business program will utilize the space to conduct simulated board meetings and web-based team analysis while the professor walks the class through the process step-by-step. Legal studies students, such as those studying to work as crime scene investigators, will use the space to investigate mock crime scene scenarios. Counseling students pursuing their licensure will conduct and record mock counseling sessions, providing the opportunity for their peers and professors to offer valuable feedback.

The additional 244 beds included in the four stories of suite-style dormitories will provide enough housing to allow more of Husson’s students the opportunity to live on-campus. Each living “quad” will include two-student bedrooms, a shared living room space and a shared bathroom.
