Husson University is expanding its Opportunity Scholarship program to a third Maine county with the addition of a new scholarship for qualified students from Aroostook County.

A smiling man and woman stand together in a well lit lobby. The new scholarship will allow qualified Aroostook County students to attend Husson University tuition-free thanks to the generosity of Bruce and Cynthia (Clavette) Grainger ’90/’90.

The Clavette-Grainger Opportunity Scholarship will provide five Aroostook County students annually who have earned a 3.0 GPA in high school, have a family AGI of $80,000 or less, are federal Pell Grant eligible and who live in or attend school in Aroostook County a tuition-free opportunity to attend Husson via a combination of federal, state and institutional aid. First-year undergraduate students who are awarded the scholarship must attend school full-time in a four-year degree granting program on the Bangor campus. It’s the third Opportunity Scholarship for Husson, joining the Cyr Opportunity Scholarship for Penobscot County students and the Harry S. Greenfield Opportunity Scholarship for Piscataquis County students.

"We are thrilled to expand the Opportunity Scholarship program to a third Maine county thanks to the generosity of Husson University Board of Trustees Vice Chair Bruce Grainger and his wife Cynthia Grainger. Both are proud Husson graduates who know the value of a Husson education," said Coy-Ogan.

Husson University holds a special place in the Graingers’ hearts, so they wanted to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent aspiring students from attending Husson. Married for 35 years, the couple first met in 1988 during the first few weeks of their junior year. Cynthia Grainger was a new third-year student who had transferred to Husson after earning her associate degree at a community college in Aroostook County, Maine. She is a first-generation college graduate who grew up in Madawaska, Maine, and financed her own education through jobs, student loans and work-study programs.

Students applying for undergraduate admission in Fall 2027 admission are eligible. Applications are currently being accepted for Fall 2027 admission and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
