Husson University is pleased to announce that it will be awarding two honorary degrees at the 127th Husson University Commencement on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Dr. Lon Cardon, President and CEO of Jackson Laboratories, will receive the honorary Doctor of Science degree and Melissa Smith, Chair, CEO and President  of WEX, will receive the honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree.

An internationally recognized geneticist and demonstrated leader in academic, pharma and biotech research, Cardon joined The Jackson Laboratory, or JAX, in November 2021. Since then, he has led a bold strategic vision that builds on JAX’s nearly 100-year expertise in mouse models and genetics. Under his leadership, JAX has expanded into human cellular modeling and into data science, establishing a first-of-its-kind discovery platform designed to accelerate cures and transform human health. Before joining JAX, Cardon served as chief scientific officer and chief scientific strategy officer at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., a rare disease biotechnology company. Earlier he was senior vice president and head of genetics, quantitative sciences and alternative discovery/development at GlaxoSmithKline plc, where he chaired the Discovery Investment Board, overseeing research funding across all therapeutic areas. He will also be the speaker at the 127th Commencement.

Smith joined WEX in 1997 and has filled a variety of leadership roles, including serving as the Chief Financial Officer during the company’s IPO in 2005, becoming CEO in 2014, and Chair in 2019. Under her leadership, WEX has transformed from a U.S.-based fleet card provider into a global leader in simplifying the business of running a business through intelligent payment and workflow solutions. Under her leadership, revenue more than tripled from $818 million in 2014 to $2.63 billion in 2024. WEX now operates on five continents and employs nearly 6,500 people.

“We are pleased to honor two respected leaders in business at our 127th Husson University Commencement. Both Lon Cardon and Melissa Smith demonstrate a commitment to innovation and excellence that aligns well with Husson’s core mission of preparing students for the careers of tomorrow,” said President Lynne Coy-Ogan.
