Husson University student Kaden Porter ‘26 spent the summer before his fourth year of college getting behind-the-desk experience in mortgage and credit lending and having one-on-one meetings with Bangor Savings Bank leaders.

The unique experience was part of his 12-week summer internship with the bank, a perfect opportunity for the business administration student with a concentration in finance.

“Putting [knowledge] into practice is definitely a very big step,” said Porter. “You can have all the book knowledge you want, but actually taking that book knowledge and seeing how that would actually work in day-to-day life in the roles that you’re interested in, is really big.”

Porter was one of 13 students from Maine and New Hampshire in the program. As part of the group, he was also able to attend multiple Maine Career Catalyst events.

Each intern had several small projects to do over the course of the internship, as well as an overarching capstone presentation in their field of choice. Porter focused on inefficiencies and overlaps in the mortgage department.

“Their presentations were put in front of quite a few leaders of the bank,” said Tanner McClure, a management trainee at the bank.

McClure was Porter’s mentor for much of the summer. He started as a teller with Bangor Savings and advanced into the leadership problem. Porter has also worked as a teller for the bank.

“The biggest goal of our internships is to create an opportunity and a valuable experience that gives them passionate insight into a future career staying in Maine or New Hampshire,” said McClure.

The internship wasn’t only for professional experience. As part of his work in the mortgage department, Porter also had the opportunity to take a homebuying class and better understand the mortgage loan process.

Interns were able to get an idea of several departments within the bank, not just the one they were focused on. While Porter mainly focused on mortgage, he also got tours of credit, IT and more.

“Many people don’t understand how sophisticated Bangor Savings Bank is when it comes to IT,” said Porter. “If you got to tour the data center, it would blow your mind too.”

Porter hopes to work in commercial credit after graduation.
