Husson Hosting Trent’s Tree in Support of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

BANGOR, MAINE — A picture of a smiling young man. A snowflake with the words “Stay; For Life.” Blue and white lights. These are some of the things decorating a very special tree that’s been erected inside O’Donnell Commons at Husson University.

Known as Trent’s Tree, this is part of a statewide effort to bring attention to mental health and suicide prevention in December. The project was brought to Husson by senior nursing student Alexxus Stevens, who is the cousin of the young man the project is named for.

“My reason for bringing this tree to Husson is that I hope it can help even one person through the holiday season,” said Stevens. “Having Trent’s Tree at Husson is a way to reach the college aged population, as this can be a very challenging time in life. I believe it’s important for there to be resources on campus that remind everyone they are not alone and there is always help available if they may need it.”

Individuals are invited to hang ornaments to honor Trent, loved ones lost to suicide, themselves or anyone who is battling mental health issues. People are also welcomed to visit the tree to gain a sense of peace and strength from the outpouring of love displayed there.

Stay; For Life is a nonprofit organization that is working to decrease the stigma around men’s mental health in Maine. Angela Whitten, co-founder and president of Stay; For Life, is Trent’s mom and created the Trent’s Tree project during the holiday season of 2022.

The tree is open to the public through Jan. 5. Husson University is among seven locations hosting trees this season.
