Husson University to Host EdCampBangor

Published on: November 1, 2015

BANGOR, MAINE – November 6, 2016 – For the second consecutive year, EdCamp is coming to Husson University. This free professional development opportunity is open to all Maine educators working with students from Pre-K to 12th grade.

Unlike other professional development opportunities, participants in EdCampBangor will determine the content of the educational sessions the day of the event. This differs significantly from traditional conferences where the topics for the educational sessions are pre-determined prior to registrations.

“At EdCampBangor, the attendees help build the schedule and decide on the topics they want to discuss,” said Gretchen Schaefer, an instructional technologist at Husson University. “Participants then go to any of all of the sessions that interest them. It’s a great way for teachers to share information and ideas with their colleagues.”

Husson University has donated the use of its Bangor campus for the event. The day will begin on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. with a large group session in the Gracie Theatre. Participant-determined educational sessions will be held in the adjacent Beardsley Meeting House academic spaces. Everyone in attendance will also participate in a closing session in the Gracie Theatre from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The Maine Education Association will be sponsoring lunch at Husson’s Dickerman Dining Center. Breakfast will be sponsored by Jump Rope.

Sponsors are not permitted to have their own special sessions or tables. EdCamp participants appreciate that the conference is solely devoted to the exchange of professional information.

Participants at last year’s inaugural EdCamp Bangor had this to say about the 2014 event:

• "Amazing to witness a group of people coming together sharing ideas and generating ideas."

• "I love that I can connect with other educators from all around Maine."

• "Surprisingly enough, I knew something that someone else didn't and I could share!"

• "I came away with things I could use in my classroom on Monday. Professional development is so much more powerful when it's useful and practical."

“As one of Maine’s premier providers of college degrees that lead to state teacher certification, we are proud to be the site of EdCampBangor,” said Lynne Coy-Ogan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Husson University. “Husson believes in supporting the educational needs of teachers. No other profession makes as profound an impact on the lives of young people. Teachers are instrumental in keeping children on the path toward lifelong success.”

EdCampBangor runs from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, November 7, 2015. Attendance at the event is capped at 150 attendees. There is no charge to attend. The Darling’s Ice Cream Truck for a Cause will be on campus from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. that day as part of EdCampBangor. Funds raised by the ice cream truck will be donated to scholarships for students attending Husson University’s School of Education.
