BANGOR, MAINE – Husson University announced today that it was honored by the Maine International Trade Center (MITC) at Maine International Trade Day 2014. The educational institution was named MITC’s “Service Provider of the Year.”

The Service Provider of the Year Award is presented to a person or organization that has established an international presence for the export of their service. A long-time state leader in international education, Husson University participated in the 2013 State of Maine Trade Mission to Mexico and Colombia. Husson currently enrolls 33 foreign students from 20 different countries and is an active leader/mentor in MITC's StudyMaine program.

Accepting the award on behalf of Husson University was the institution’s President and CEO Robert A. Clark, Ph.D. “Forging international global understanding through learning initiatives is one of the ways we deliver educational excellence at Husson University. I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the Husson University community which is dedicated to transforming students’ lives every day.”

The award was presented to Husson University at MITC’s 34th annual Maine International Trade Day, northern New England’s biggest international business event. Approximately 300 attendees from Maine, New England and eastern Canada attended the event on May 15. The professionals attending Maine International Trade Day gathered to discuss ways to stimulate discussion and spark ideas for new business strategies and collaborations across international borders.

“At Husson University, we believe that giving students an opportunity to study and learn with their peers from other cultures better prepares them for successful careers in today’s competitive global economy. Intercultural competency enhances students' ability to relate to people of different backgrounds and increases tolerance and understanding among the future leaders of tomorrow,” says Colleen Grover, Director of International Initiatives at Husson University.

In addition to bringing students from other countries to Maine, Husson University also promotes travel study opportunities. Husson's partnerships with foreign universities and study abroad organizations now allow Husson students to experience travel study in more than 40 countries and 70 cities around the globe. A group of graduate students, undergraduate students, faculty and staff are currently participating in a business and cultural tour of China coordinated by Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick, Director of the School of Business and Management at Husson University. Experiences like this one, organized through Husson’s College of Business, help provide a deeper understanding of how commerce is conducted in foreign lands.
