The Gracie Theatre at Husson University eagerly awaits the arrival of Deer Camp on Saturday, March 2. That’s right, the Gracie is heading “up ta’ camp” with the hilarious touring production, Deer Camp the Musical, featuring four fearless hunters on their annual trek to deer camp. The show features the “Darryl brothers” of The Newhart Show fame with show times at 4:00 and 8:00pm.on Saturday, March 2.
The story takes place in a hunting cabin and centers around four hunting buddies who have decades of hunting trips behind them. Since they have yet to bring home a single deer, their wives are getting suspicious and demanding results. What to do? Should they shoot a deer, steal one, buy one? Their predicament is played out with a dozen humorous songs touching on grunt horns, coupon clippers, beer, bingo players and, dare we mention, a dance number a l a Chippendales.
The creative team includes playwright Gene Jurek and composer Doug Spartz, with Ross Young directing. The show first opened at the Actors Theater of Minnesota, and when the Darryl brothers, Tony Papenfuss (Doogski) and John Voldstad (Digger) signed on for this show, they knew the show would be a hit. Voldstad, best known for his role as one of the dopey “Darryl brothers” on The Newhart Show, has film credits including Forrest Gump, Ghostbusters, and Stripes along with stage performances at the renowned Mark Taper Forum. A reunion with his 8 year Newhart show cast member Tony Papenfuss, has been a fun experience for these veteran actors. Watch and laugh a long with these loveable louts as they hatch a plan to save their hunting paradise without ever firing a shot.
