Sport Management
Program Overview
The sport industry exists in a unique space between entertainment and enterprise, being "too much of a game to be a business; and too much of a business to be a game." Husson University's Sport Management program, housed within the College of Business, embraces this dual identity by combining sport-related education with core business principles. The program defines "sport" broadly, encompassing not only athletic competition but also the production and promotion of sports through equipment, apparel, marketing, licensing, and broadcasting. Students are offered a diverse selection of courses, including sport marketing, psychology, law, and facilities management, all aimed at preparing them for the multi-billion dollar global sport industry.
Equally important is the program's focus on “management,” emphasizing leadership, organizational skills, and business knowledge. Sport management students take a comprehensive suite of business courses alongside their sport-specific studies, earning a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. This positions them for a wide range of careers—from sport administration and coaching to roles in the broader business world. The skills taught are transferable, with particular focus on interpersonal communication, ethics, and organizational effectiveness, all of which are valuable across many industries.
With over 200 universities offering sport management degrees, competition is fierce both among schools and in the job market. Husson differentiates itself through its strong professional orientation and emphasis on real-world experience. From the start, students are encouraged to pursue their career goals through practical learning, including mandatory internships with sports organizations. These experiences ensure that graduates are not only academically prepared, but also professionally equipped to stand out in the competitive sport management field.
Curriculum
The sport management curriculum emphasizes experiential learning through the practical assignments integrated into the sport management courses, and Husson students are required to complete at least six credit hours of internship experience with a sport organization.
Students seeking to earn their Master in Business Administration can do so in conjunction with their Bachelor in Science in Sport Management degree in 5 years. The Master of Business Administration emphasizes the integration of theory and practice to train current and future administrators.
