Naval ROTC
Prepare to Lead in the Navy or Marine Corps
Husson University is proud to offer its students the opportunity to participate in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) through a cross-enrollment agreement with Maine Maritime Academy (MMA). This partnership allows eligible and qualified Husson students to pursue a commission as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps while earning their degree from Husson.
Although Husson does not host a NROTC unit directly, students can fully participate in the program hosted by MMA. Through this collaborative agreement, students from Husson will be classified as midshipmen and receive the same Naval Science instruction, leadership development, and professional training as their MMA peers, with the goal of commissioning into active duty following graduation.
Students in Navy ROTC develop a strong foundation in leadership, naval operations, and professional ethics, preparing them to serve as commissioned officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. Through academic coursework and hands-on training, they build skills in decision-making, team coordination, communication, physical fitness, and technical areas like navigation and ship systems. The program emphasizes critical thinking, ethical leadership, and personal discipline—qualities that serve graduates well in both military and civilian careers.
Students enrolled in the Naval ROTC program will take Naval Science courses taught by the Department of Naval Science at Maine Maritime Academy, under the leadership of the Professor of Naval Science and Commanding Officer. Classes may be held at MMA, Husson University, or the University of Maine, depending on scheduling and enrollment.
Naval ROTC students will follow a structured curriculum that includes:
- Introduction to Naval Science
- Seapower and Maritime Affairs
- Leadership and Management
- Navigation (Navy option)
- Naval Ship Systems I & II (Navy option)
- Naval Operations and Seamanship (Navy option)
- Leadership and Ethics
- Evolution of Warfare (Marine option)
- Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare (Marine option)
- Naval Science Laboratory (All options – conducted weekly)
All course credits, grades, and academic records will be maintained by Husson University and applied toward students’ degrees in accordance with University policies.
Naval ROTC midshipmen from Husson University are eligible for scholarship programs, subsistence allowances, and stipends, subject to Navy regulations and selection processes. All required uniforms and textbooks related to Naval Science courses are provided at no cost to the student.
Students pursuing a degree in Nursing can also apply for nursing scholarships through the Navy.
High school seniors may apply for national NROTC scholarships at navy.com, while current Husson students may apply as College Program candidates.
In addition to academic training, students will participate in weekly labs, field training, and professional development activities. These opportunities are designed to build leadership, teamwork, and ethical decision-making skills critical for military service.
