Request Accommodations

Reasonable Accomodations Overview

A student with a documented disability may request an academic adjustment, service, or auxiliary aid in order to fully participate or access a course, program, campus housing, or campus-wide activity. The Director of Accessibility Services takes into account the student’s functional limitations of their disability, requirements of a program or course, and considers if a request would present an undue burden on the institution. Reasonable accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis. A reasonable accommodation may not fundamentally alter the essential nature of a program or course. Requests that are determined unreasonable may include requests to provide personal attendants, individually prescribed devices, readers for personal use or study, or other devices or services of a personal nature, such as typing for homework.

Setting up Accommodations for the First Time

1. Complete the Accommodation Request Form

2. Schedule an intake appointment

  • The intake appointment is needed to gather basic information. You will meet with the Director of Accessibility Services. You may or may not have documentation at the time of this meeting. If needed, this may be done over the phone. Plan for 30 minutes to an hour to complete this initial meeting.
  • To schedule an intake meeting, contact studentsuccess@husson.edu or call 207-992-1934 or stop by the Center for Student Success located in room 208 Peabody Hall between 8am4:30pm Monday-Friday.

3. Submit Documentation

  • Review our General Documentation Guidelines
  • Confidential documentation may be submitted directly to:
Liz Atkinson, Accessibility Services, Husson University
    1 College Circle
    208 Peabody Hall
    Bangor, ME 04401
  • Failure to submit documentation will result in a delay of an accommodations decision.
  • After a decision has been made, accommodations decisions are communicated to the student over the student's husson.edu email.
Returning Students

If accommodations have been arranged for a student in a prior semester, the returning student simply schedules a meeting with Accessibility Services to renew accommodations. It’s possible that updated documentation may be necessary in some situations. Accommodation Plans must be updated each semester the student would like them in place. It’s best to schedule a meeting at the beginning of the semester, or prior to the semester starting.

To schedule a meeting, contact studentsuccess@husson.edu or 207.922.1934, or stop by the Center for Student Success located in room 208 Peabody Hall between 8am – 4:30pm Monday-Friday.
