Husson Names Women's Track Coach
Date of Release: May 19, 2011
Husson University is pleased to announce the hiring of Chris Wood as head women's track coach and strength and conditioning coach. Wood will lead Husson's newly-formed women's outdoor track program in the 2011-12 season and will coach women's indoor track in 2012-2013. His passion and intensity for track and strength and conditioning will be an asset for Husson's entire athletic department.
"I am very excited to be named Head Coach and would like to thank Husson University and Bob Reasso for this opportunity" stated Wood. "To be able to build a program literally from the ground up is an opportunity that few experience. It will be a challenging road, but with the help of many other very strong women's programs I am confident that we will make an immediate impact in the New England Region. We will build up the athletes and the staff necessary to create a championship-caliber team."
As head strength and conditioning coach, Wood will work with Husson's fifteen varsity sports programs to develop and implement sport-specific strength and conditioning programs. As head women's track coach, Wood will be responsible for bringing in the first ever recruiting classes for women's outdoor track for the 2011-12 season and women's indoor track for the 2012-13 season.
"We went on an extensive search with over 70 applicants and we think we have the right person for the job" explained Director of Athletics Bob Reasso. "Chris is a highly motivated and charismatic coach who we feel will do an exceptional job launching and coaching our women's track and field program. I'm also excited to have Chris oversee all our student-athletes in strength and development. He's been a successful coach on the Division I and Division III levels and brings a track record of success."
Wood has a considerable background in track and strength and conditioning. He served as the head strength and conditioning coach for Olympic sports at Temple University and was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at LaSalle University. Prior to coming to Husson, Wood was the assistant track coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Pacific Lutheran University. Wood specializes in coaching heptathletes, decathletes, javelin and jumps and has been exposed to all facets of track events in his four years at Pacific Lutheran.
He has coached numerous student athletes to national and regional accolades. This season, two javelin throwers under Wood's coaching qualified for the NCAA Championships and are ranked 12th and 30th in the nation. Additionally, Wood has coached long jump: one NCAA provisional qualifier, two conference champions and six all conference jumpers, triple Jump: one conference champion and four all conference jumpers, javelin: four NCAA provisional qualifiers, and four all conference throwers. As a strength and conditioning coach, Wood has coached 10 NSCA All-Americans.
He holds a masters degree in athletic administration from Temple University and a bachelor's degree in exercise science from the University of Puget Sound.
