Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service provided to Husson University students, faculty and staff to obtain materials not available in Sawyer Library’s print or electronic collection.

Materials requested through interlibrary loan don’t come instantly.  Plan your requests accordingly:

  • Journal articles – 2 to 3 business days, generally
  • Books/Media – 5 to 10 business days, generally

Note: Interlibrary loan is not an appropriate substitute for the purchase of textbooks.  Books are generally only loaned for four weeks and requesting textbooks and other course materials currently used in classes may violate copyright law.

Most libraries will not loan reference books, entire issues of journals, audiovisual materials, or dissertations. Libraries may also choose not to loan recent fiction and rare or fragile items.

Check the Minerva catalog, online databases and talk with a librarian to make sure all possibilities of our collection have been explored before using the interlibrary loan service.

To request an article, book or media item, you may either:

  • Email the information about what article or book you want to:
  • Use built-in ILL request forms as you search EBSCO, ProQuest, OVID and PubMed databases for articles.  To order from PubMed, register for a Loansome Doc account.  Follow these directions to register.  Contact a librarian for more information.
  • Fill out the appropriate printed request form.  Supply all the information asked for and leave the completed form at the Service Desk.
  • Order books and media directly from Minerva and MaineCat libraries yourself with your Sawyer Library card.  Go here for more information and directions, or speak to a librarian.

You will receive a confirmation that your request has been submitted or received from the database and/or library. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact the library at

You will be notified via your Husson email when requested material is received.

Articles will be forwarded to you as PDF attachments.

Books may be picked up at the library’s Service Desk.  It is the responsibility of the borrower to return material on time and/or pay any overdue fine assessed by the lending library.

You may also ask at the Service Desk, phone, or e-mail the library to learn if an item has arrived.

The library is bound by any restrictions imposed by the lending library.  These may include restricting the use of material to within the library, obtaining the signature of the borrower, and/or prohibiting photocopying.

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, US Code) places limitations on what may be copied, as well as under what conditions and for what purposes it may be copied. All ILL requests are subject to copyright guidelines. See Fair Use ( for more information.
