Husson University of Pharmacy

Office of Experiential Education

Cassandra Parsons, PharmD, BCACP, BCGP

As part of the Pharm.D. Curriculum, students are required to complete both Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE). Experiential learning represents 1/3 of the curriculum and provides students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom, skills lab, and bench lab in real world settings with practicing pharmacists. Office of Experiential Education has four goals:

  • Assess student progression toward practice ready competency.
  • Expose students to different areas of practice to aid in their career path decisions.
  • Build rotation schedules that facilitate student opportunities to solidify knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to practice pharmacy competently.
  • Build rotation schedules that enhance student’s opportunities to achieve their career goals.

Using their skills, students will work with pharmacists and technicians to dispense medications, administer immunizations, recommend evidenced based therapeutic treatment plans, and much more. Students will learn in practice experiences the basics of pharmacy practice in multiple settings. By the end of the third professional year, students will have be exposed to a community, hospital, transitional care and ambulatory care obtaining 300 hours of practice experience. The fourth professional year is the culmination of learning as students participate in six six-week rotations of 240 hours each of advanced pharmacy practice experiences. Throughout rotations, the Office of Experiential Education (OEE) works closely with Pharm.D. students to match them with introductory and advanced practice experiences that align with their prior work experience and future career goals.
