Husson University Sponsors EdCampBangor

Published on: November 3, 2014

BANGOR, MAINE - For the first time ever, EdCamp is coming to Bangor, Maine! This free professional development opportunity is open to all Maine educators working with students from Pre-K to 12th grade.

Unlike other professional development opportunities, participants in EdCampBangor will determine the content of the educational sessions the day of the event. This differs significantly from traditional conferences where the topics for the educational sessions are pre-determined prior to registrations.

“This is a unique opportunity for teachers to share information and ideas with their colleagues,” said Gretchen Schaefer, an instructional technologist at Husson University. “It’s a great way for teachers to learn more about the best practices at other school systems; ways to address classroom teaching challenges; and strategies to improve educational outcomes.”

Husson University has donated the use of its Bangor campus for the event. The day will begin and end with a large group session in the Gracie Theatre. Participant-determined educational sessions will be held in the adjacent Beardsley Meeting House academic spaces.

The Maine Education Foundation will be sponsoring lunch at Husson’s newly renovated Dickerman Dining Commons. Rainstorm Consulting has provided some of the essential financial support necessary to hold the event.

Other sponsors include (in alphabetical order) ExplainEverything, Flocabulary, Kahoot!, Remind, StoryboardThat, ThingLink, VoiceThread, WeeBeez, Yapp and Zaption.

Interestingly, sponsors are not permitted to have their own special sessions or tables. Prior EdCamp participants from other states like that the conference format is solely devoted to the exchange of professional information.
“As one of Maine’s premier providers of college degrees that lead to state teacher certification, we are proud to be the site of EdCampBangor,” said Lynne Coy-Ogan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Husson University. “Husson believes in supporting the educational needs of teachers. No other profession makes as profound an impact on the lives of young people. Teachers are instrumental in keeping children on the path toward lifelong success.”

EdCampBangor runs from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, October 25th. Attendance at the event is capped at 150 attendees. There is no charge to attend. For more information about EdCampBangor, visit edcampbangor.com
