Incoming Students to Participate in Husson University FYI Day Event

Published on: January 2, 2014

BANGOR, MAINE – December 31, 2013 – Making the transition from high school to college is an important turning point in the lives of young adults. Incoming freshmen are often unprepared for the increased levels of attention that will need to be devoted to academics. In addition, they are also unaccustomed to the autonomous decision-making that comes with living independently.

In fact, college instructors estimate that around two in five (42%) of recent public high school graduates were inadequately prepared to meet the expectations of college-level classes

In an effort to help students successfully adjust to the college learning environment, Husson University is sponsoring a First Year Information (FYI) Day event at its Bangor, Maine campus on January 20, 2014. The event is designed to give new, enrolled students an introductory orientation to college life.

In discussing the importance of the FYI Day orientation, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Husson University Provost, Dr. Lynne Coy-Ogan said, “College is a time when students learn how to think and act independently. They also learn how to effectively manage multiple challenges.”

“This event has been designed to support the transition to college so that students better understand both their obligations and the opportunities afforded to them as they pursue a degree in the professional discipline of their choice. FYI Days are an important first step for students interested in a successful college experience. Previous students have found the event especially helpful as it allows them to become familiar with the university and all of the support services available to them.”

The schedule of events for the upcoming FYI day is filled with useful information about:
• Academic Services
• Student Activities, Clubs and Organizations
• Career Services
• International Students Association (ISA) and Travel Opportunities
• Counseling Services
• Safety and Security
• Technology
• Disability Services
• Residential Life
• Financial Aid
• Student Life
• Student IDs and the Bookstore

A “Meet the Faculty” gathering is one of the highlights of the event. This provides incoming students with the opportunity to ask questions about academics.

Students attending previous FYI Days held in January have expressed an appreciation for the personalized nature of the event. While smaller in scale than summer FYI Day sessions, participating students often feel that they are able to delve deeper into specific topics of interest.

For example, commuter students who transfer their associate’s degree credits to Husson University in order to pursue a bachelor’s degree sometimes have little or no previous experience with an institution of higher learning beyond their classroom studies. The FYI Day experience can help these students better understand the rich spectrum of services and experiences afforded to them as part of college life at Husson University.
