School of Health
Society focuses on quality of life, which means wellness for individuals, families, and communities. Society is also challenged to develop strategies to support and cultivate life and family, to promote health, and to prevent disease. In this dynamic field, the Husson School of Health focuses on three core professions: nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy. By specializing, Husson offers university-level professional depth in a personalized, small collegiate environment where faculty and students are on a first-name basis. As a value-centered private university, Husson provides natural opportunities for nursing and therapy students to pursue entrepreneurial interests and personal growth. Click on the headings below to learn more about our degree programs. Nursing The school partners with the region's tertiary care health center, Eastern Maine Medical Center to offer the Husson/EMMC Baccalaureate Nursing Program and has affiliations with an array of other community health organizations. Credentialed faculty combine classroom theory and exceptional clinical opportunity with practice, research, and professional leadership. The Family Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing tracks provide Masters' degrees and Post Master's Certificates, enabling graduates to take active roles in primary health care. Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapy is an entry-level Master's degree and is five years in length for those who need to complete all the requirements. Students begin to take occupational therapy courses in their freshman year. Three of the four introductory courses (taken in the freshman and sophomore years) are primarily on-line courses. Class sizes are small (25 students). The program has an emphasis on the use of research and evidence as a means to justify practice. There is level I fieldwork in every term starting in the junior year - this ensures that the course work is related to practice. There is community service in the freshman and sophomore years to expose students to occupational therapy and the needs of people with disabilities in the community. Physical Therapy The Physical Therapy program provides a six-year curriculum, leading to a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a B.S. in Kinesiology. There are state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a faculty on the cutting edge of the profession. A unique focus in this selective program is retention for each matriculating student, a belief that each individual can and should succeed.
