Application Process

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first and most important step in applying for financial aid. It is used to determine your eligibility for need-based financial aid and all Federal, state and institutional student aid programs. Students must complete a FAFSA each year in which they wish to receive federal grants and loans.

Deadlines: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) becomes available in October 2024 for the 2025-2026 FAFSA year. This will include new features to help simplify the process.

Ways to file: The 2024-2025 FAFSA is currently available here for Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Summer 2025 students. Remember to include Husson University's school code (002043) in step six of the FAFSA. This form is free, and you should never have to pay to complete this federal form. We encourage students to file the FAFSA electronically and to use the Internal Revenue Service's Data Retrieval system for the most efficient and accurate process.

The FSA IDlandscape

The FSA ID allows students and parents to access and electronically sign the online version of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with a user-selected username and password.

This new login process is more secure, eliminating the need for students and parents to provide personally identifiable information (such as name, date of birth and Social Security Number) every time they access U.S. Department of Education websites. It also permits self-service password retrieval by email and name changes (example: marriage).

Uses of the FSA ID: The FSA ID will provide a single sign-on for accessing all of the Department of Education's student/parent websites, such as FAFSA, National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and StudentAid.gov.

Below you will find a step-by-step tutorial for creating your FSA ID and password.

Husson School Code

When you submit the FAFSA, you will need to enter the Husson University school code, so that we are sent the results of your application. Our school code is 002043.

Student Aid Index

Your  Student Aid Index (SAI) is a figure determined by the federal processor when you file the FAFSA. The data that you report on the FAFSA is calculated using a formula called Federal Methodology, and the resulting SAI is the amount of money that the formula assumes you and your family can contribute toward your educational expenses for the year. Note that the SAI may not be the amount that you will owe.

Your financial need is determined by the following formula:

Cost of Attendance
- (minus) Student Aid Index
- (minus) Outside Assistance
------------------------------------------------
= (equals) Financial Need

Once your financial need is determined, we will offer as much aid as possible to fill your need. Your exact offer may vary due to the availability of funds as well as deadline requirements. If you feel you have extenuating circumstances that our office was not aware of at the time we offered your financial aid, please refer to Appealing Your Offer.

Husson's Financial Aid Offers

After our office receives your FAFSA information, we will mail your financial aid offer. Due to the anticipated delay from the new FAFSA process, we expect to send our estimated 2024-25 aid offers in  May. Returning students receive their financial aid packages this summer.

Master Promissory Note and Direct Loan Entrance Counseling

Every student who accepts Federal Direct Loans as part of their financial aid offer is required to complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling if they did not borrow at Husson last year. Both of these documents must be completed on the FASFA website using your FSA ID.
