MAJ Jeffery Shirland was born in Bangor, Maine. He is a 1999 graduate of The University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.
MAJ Shirland enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard as an Aircraft Mechanic as a member of the 112th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) in 1992. Upon graduation from the University of Maine he was commissioned as a Transportation Officer and was assigned to the 1136th Transportation Company (Medium) as a platoon leader. In 2003 MAJ Shirland deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 1136th Transportation Company as a platoon leader and as the Unit Mobilization Officer. In 2004 he assumed command of the 1136th Trans Co. until 2006. MAJ Shirland served as the Recruiting and Retention Battalion Operations Officer until 2008 when he deployed to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as an Embedded Trainer with the Afghan Army. MAJ Shirland went on to serve as the Support Operations Officer in the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and the Assistant State Training Officer at Joint Forces Headquarters, Maine National Guard until May 2013.
MAJ Shirland’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (2 OLC), the National Defense Ribbon (2 BBS), Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Over Seas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, Army National Guard Recruiting Badge, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. He is an inducted member of the Quartermaster Order of St Martin.
