Mary is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She received her Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing from Rutgers University in NJ and a Masters of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University in NJ. Currently, she is enrolled in the Doctoral of Higher Education Program at UMO. While living in NJ, she worked in a variety of settings; Childrens Hospital of New Jersey, pediatric home care, and research in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). In 1997, she relocated with her family to Maine where she accepted a full-time position as a PNP provider at Penobscot Pediatrics. Mary continues to work there one day a week. In January 2003, she accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Husson in the Baccalaureate Nursing Program. In 2003 and 2004, Mary traveled to Honduras, Central America to provide health care to the local community. In June 2004, she was accompanied by three nursing students from Husson.

Assistant Professor, Physical Therapy
Chad received a B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). He continued his graduate education at the University of Michigan, completing a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Movement Science with emphasis on pediatric disabilities. During his graduate career, Chad worked on numerous research projects, including treadmill training for infants with Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. He has also conducted research in the areas of autism and gerontology. Dr. Tiernan’s current research interests involve using approaches from dynamic systems to understand how social, cognitive, and physical development impact motor behavior and physical activity in children with and without disabilities. He has a number of peer-reviewed publications and presentations in this area.
I believe that higher education is not solely about academics. Students should also enhance their ability to think critically and freely. I want all of my students to demonstrate respect and empathy towards their patients, fellow classmates, and members of the community as well. Therefore, I try to devise my courses in a manner that will promote both academic success and personal growth. I also encourage students to engage in a variety of volunteer activities.
Research
Chad has a strong preference for inter-disciplinary research. Specifically, he is interested in applying principles from dynamic systems theory to understand how various developmental domains (e.g., physical, socio-emotional, cognitive) interact to affect motor behavior and participation in children with and without disabilities. Most recently, Chad investigated the impact of socio-emotional and physical factors on gross motor skills and physical activity in school-aged children with and without Down syndrome. Dr. Tiernan is also interested in pursuing inter-disciplinary research to further understand and promote physical activity and well-being in older adults.

Paula returns to Husson University after having formally served as the Director of the School of Education in the College of Health and Education. She brings over 37 years of diverse professional experiences in public and private education in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New York, and Maine including K-16 classroom teaching, adult learning, school counseling, academic advising, and administration. Just prior to her employment at Husson University she had served for 11 years as Dean of Students and Guidance Director at one of the largest high schools in Maine. Paula received her M. Ed., C.A.S. and Ed. D. degrees from the University of Maine. She is a Nationally Certified Counselor and holds State of Maine K-12 School Counseling licensure. Research interests and curriculum development efforts have concentrated primarily on student aspirations and attitude towards learning. A Blaine House Scholarship recipient, Paula has served on a number of stakeholders groups and task forces at the Maine Department of Education focusing on various initiatives including state and local assessments, comprehensive K-16 teaching and program planning, student aspirations, mentoring, and health & wellness. Paula is also a member of several national, regional and state professional associations and organizations.
I strongly believe that experience is unquestionably one of the most powerful teachers and that individuals learn most effectively in a supportive, intellectually stimulating environment. Husson University’s College of Health and Education offers future professionals a truly unique and enriched learning experience that integrates both theory and extensive clinical practice. Upon program completion and entrance into their chosen career paths, our graduates are well prepared to make significant and innovative contributions to their respective professional fields. Dr. Sara Tippet joined the staff at Husson University in August of 2011. She graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. She then went on to complete a general practice residency within the Veteran’s Affairs health care system. While on residency, she worked with students from a variety of pharmacy schools who were completing rotations in the hospital. She also had the opportunity to spend time in the classroom as part of the teaching certificate program at Concordia University Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.
Sara is joined in Maine by her husband. They enjoy exploring the multitude of outdoor activities Maine has to offer. Sara also enjoys reading in her spare time and spending time with her family back in Michigan.

Learning is a continuous process that may start in the classroom but must be applied and expanded upon in practice. I hope to instill in my students the skills necessary to facilitate their own learning so that they can develop their individual practice style and advance pharmacy throughout Maine after graduation.

Gail received a BA and MS in Biometrics from the University of Minnesota and a PhD from the University of North Carolina. After graduation she spent three years working at Quintiles, Inc., a contract research organization that helps biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies get their newly designed drugs approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). She spent a year at West Virginia University, Department of Statistics, then three years at the Duke Clinical Research Institute teaching and consulting and then six years at the University of North Carolina in the Department of Biostatistics. In 2005, Gail joined the faculty at Husson. In addition to teaching, she serves as a consultant for students and faculty at Husson who need help designing, conducting and/or analyzing their research projects. Gail is married with four children, and loves to water ski, swim, hike and play soccer.
I encourage students to be active learners. Ask questions in class, come by and visit me in my office, and/or discuss class materials with other students. Find examples of what you are learning in the classroom, outside of the classroom. To succeed in college, learning must take place inside and outside the classroom.

Gail has been consulting with health professionals for over 20 years. Her expertise is in clinical trials, categorical data analysis and online instruction. She currently consults with medical professionals and faculty from the University of New England, University of Maine, University of North Carolina and Eastern Maine Medical Center on a regular basis. Gail has successfully collaborated with 12 different principal investigators on 15 grants over the last 20 years. As a public health professional she is particularly interested in research that concentrates on affordable ways to get a large amount of individuals to change their behavior in a positive way. Studying the relationship between providers and patients is an effective way to do this as patients with chronic disease visit their health care provider regularly and the provider can use these visits to educate their patients.
