Professor of Military Science

LTC Michael R. Davis, AR

Michael-Davis.jpegLieutenant Colonel Michael R. Davis has been serving as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Maine since June 2016.  He enlisted in the Air Force in 1990, serving in the enlisted ranks for seven years.  He earned his commission in 1998 through the U.S. Army’s Officer Candidate School with a Basic Branch of Armor.  Lieutenant Colonel Davis completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Westfield State University in Massachusetts (Class of 97’) and received a Master’s Degree from Webster University in 2007.

His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Cavalry Leader’s Course, Air Assault School, Maintenance Officer’s Leader’s Course, the Armor Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Staff and Services School, and the Command and General Staff College (ILE).

Lieutenant Colonel Davis has served in the U.S. military for over twenty-five years and in the Army over eighteen years in various command and staff positions at numerous locations. He has executed four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and conducted numerous operational deployments throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Central and South Asia. Specialties include military training, organizational leadership, operational and strategic planning.

Operations Officer

Maj. Amy Cartmell
MAJ Amy Cartmell enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard in 1996 as a medic. Her first assignment after completing initial entry training was with the 112th Medical Company (Air Ambulance) in Bangor, Maine as a Flight Medic aboard UH-1 Huey and UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. In 1997, she began to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University of Maine. In 2001, MAJ Cartmell graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Secondary Education, and was commissioned as a Medical Services Officer through the Army ROTC program. One month later, she departed for U.S. Army Flight School in Ft. Rucker Alabama, learning to fly the UH-60 Blackhawk as an Aeromedical Evacuation Pilot. Since that time, MAJ Cartmell has served in the Maine Army National Guard as a Federal Technician and Active Guard Reserve (AGR) officer, with assignments as a Training Administrator for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, and as an Officer Recruiter and Resource Manager for the Recruiting and Retention Battalion. She also continued to serve as a Pilot and Flight Platoon leader with C Co 1-126th AVN, and deployed to Louisiana in 2005 in support of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

In 2008, MAJ Cartmell deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, acting as a Flight Platoon Leader, and logging 150 combat flight hours moving injured persons, military working dogs, and medical supplies and logistics across the theater of operations.

MAJ Cartmell completed her MBA in Human Resource Management from Thomas College in Waterville, ME in 2011.

MAJ Cartmell was deployed to Kuwait in 2012 in support of Operation New Dawn. During this time, she served as a Forward Support Medical Team Leader, Pilot in Command, and Aviation Liaison to ARCENT.

MAJ Cartmell’ s awards and decorations include the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Iraqi Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Parachutist Badge and Senior Aviator Badge.

MAJ Cartmell’s most current assignment was: Operations Officer for the New England CERFP (CBRN Enhanced Response Force Package).

In her off time, MAJ Cartmell is an avid supporter of veterans support programs, cancer research and awareness initiatives, and animal rescue organizations. Her interests include farming, gardening, reading, hiking, and horseback riding. She resides on a small hobby farm in Newburgh, ME with her husband Peter.

Assistant Professor of Military Science

CPT Cameron R. Arndt was born on 27 Jan 1987 Park Ridge, Illinois, he was the first born of Matthew and Suzanne Arndt. He was raised in Madison, Wisconsin; oldest of four brothers CPT Arndt attended Ripon College where he earned a Bachelors in Politics and Government. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry attending Infantry Officers Basic Course, his first duty station was Fort Hood where took over as the Platoon Leader of 2nd Platoon Bravo Company, 1st of the 5th Cavalry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry division. He prepared his platoon for combat and was then made the company executive officer where he deployed to Iraq in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Upon returning he was selected among his peers to be the 2nd Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company Executive Officer. He then attended the Signal Captains Career Course and was then stationed at Fort Gordon and assigned to the 63rd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 35th Signal Brigade. He was assigned as the Assistant S3 before taking Command of Bravo Company on 15 May 2014.

His military education includes the Infantry Officers Basic Course, Mechanized Leaders Course, Airborne School, Unit Movement Officer School, Air Assault School. Signal Captains Career Course, DISCA Phase II course. His Awards include, The Army Service Ribbon, The Global War on Terror Service Ribbon, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Ribbon, The Iraq Campaign Medal with one campaign Star, National Defense Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Achievement Award with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, and Bronze Star Medal.

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Joseph “Joe” Miller is presently a Ph.D. Candidate in Canadian/American History at the University of Maine studying the operational management of soldier health and during the environment in the War of 1812. Joseph was Distinguished Military Graduate at North Georgia College, and received his Master’s degree from the University of Maine. He was previously assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. He completed three separate deployments to Iraq as a platoon leader in support of national elections and as an Iraqi Army adviser during the 2007 troop surge. He was injured by an IED during his second rotation and remained on active duty for two years until leaving active duty for health reasons.  His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Iraqi Campaign medal (with three service stars), Senior Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab. He was named the 2011 Army ROTC Officer Instructor of the Year. His writing has been published in The Canadian Military Journal, the US Army’s Military Review, and The Veterans Writing Project. He enjoys running ultra-marathons, chasing his son, reading with his wife Rachel and cat Madison, and going on hiking adventures with his dog Darby.

Master Sergeant Andrews has held every leadership position from Team Leader through First Sergeant. MSG Andrews is from Monticello, IN and he enlisted into the Unites States Army in July of 1996. He was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of Cannon Fired Direction Specialist (13E) and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX. MSG Andrews has served at numerous Duty Stations including Two tours at Fort Hood, TX, Two tours at Fort Sill, OK (One Combat tour to Iraq), The National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA, Fort Campbell, KY (2x Combat tours, Iraq/Afghanistan). MSG Andrews has completed all Noncommissioned Officer Courses from Basic Leaders Course thru Senior Leaders Course. He has completed the TRADOC Commander and First Sergeant Course. His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, The Bronze Star medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (3 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (3 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (1 Silver Leaf and 1 Oak Leaf Cluster). MSG Andrews is also the recipient of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. MSG Andrews is married to his wife of 20 years Amanda and have Four Children, Randal, Hailey, Hunter, and Aiden.

Mr. Brendan Fahey
Brendan Fahey was commissioned in May 1983 from the Army ROTC program at The Citadel. He attended the Infantry Officer Basic Course and graduated in September 1983. He graduated from the US Army flight school in September 1984 as a UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) pilot and was stationed at FT Hood, Texas. After attending the Aviation Officers Advanced Course and the UH-60 orientation course, Brendan Fahey was stationed in Uijongbu, Republic of Korea, from June 1988 through February 1990. He was then stationed at Fort Hood, Texas as an operational test officer conducting tests on new aviation systems such as the MH-60K Blackhawk and MH-47E Chinook helicopters.

After leaving the US Army Brendan Fahey joined the Texas Army National Guard in May 1995 as a traditional National Guardsman. He served in a number of aviation staff positions and deployed to Bosnia i Herzegovina twice as member of the Stabilization Force (SFOR) as well as Bratislava, Slovakia. Brendan Fahey became a fulltime member (AGR) of the Texas Army National Guard and deployed to Iraq from September 2006 to September 2007. He retired after 28 years of military service in October 2011.

Some of Brendan Fahey’s awards and decorations include the Senior Army Aviator Badge, Air Assault Badge, Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NATO Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. Some of his assignment and deployment locations include Alabama, Texas, Alaska, California, Honduras, El Salvador, Republic of Korea, Germany, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iraq.

Logistics Technician

Mr.  Ron McIntyre
Ron_McIntyre.jpgMr. (SFC Ret) Ronald McIntyre was born in Presque Isle, Maine on 9 June 1966. He enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1984. Upon completing One Station Unit Training for Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He completed the Infantry Advanced Non Commissioned Officer course, the Battle Staff NCO course, Sniper school, Combat Leader course, Light Infantry Leader course, Drill Sergeant School, Instructor Trainer course, Infantry Basic Non Commissioned Officer course, NBC school, Northern Warfare Instructor’s course, Combat Lifesaver course, Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare school, Rappel Master course, Air Assault school, and Small Group Leader course.

His major assignments include two tours with the 101st Airborne Division, two tours with the 6th Infantry Division (L) in Alaska, 10th Mountain Division (LI), USATC at Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he served as a Drill Sergeant, and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he served as an Instructor/Writer for Combat Training Command.

He has served as an Instructor/Writer, Operations NCO, Platoon Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, Recon Squad Leader, Sniper Team Leader, Squad Leader, Team Leader, and Infantryman.  His last tour of service was with the Black Bear Battalion as the Operations NCO, and MS II/III Instructor.
