Navigating College with a Disability

Student Responsibilities

  • Provide documentation of their disability to Disability Services in the OASIS office (Peabody 208)
  • Meet with a Disability Services advisor to request accommodations

Documentation Requirements

  • Must come from a qualified individual
  • Must state the functional limitation of the disorder in an academic setting
  • Must be from within the last three years

College Responsibilities

  • Provide reasonable accommodations to otherwise qualified students with a documented, qualifying disability

Differences Between Public School and College

  • Course requirements are not adjusted
  • College provides access but no guarantee of success
  • High school accommodations may not be deemed reasonable at the college level

To Prepare Students

  • Help them to become self-advocates
  • Make sure they have appropriate documentation
  • Make sure they can explain what their disability is, what its functional limitations are, and what types of accommodations they are requesting
  • Encourage them to access college resources (tutors, advisors, professors, Center for Academic Services)
